Intel Invests €5 Billion to Expand Ireland Manufacturing Campus and Strengthen AI Chip Production

Intel has announced a €5 billion (US$5.7 billion) investment to expand its manufacturing campus in Leixlip, Ireland, marking the next phase of capacity growth at one of the company's most advanced semiconductor facilities.
Driven by the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence and high-performance computing, demand for advanced processors continues to rise as AI infrastructure expands worldwide. To support this growth, Intel is increasing production capacity in Ireland for Intel Xeon 6 processors and future-generation Intel Xeon platforms** manufactured on its Intel 3 process technology. The investment will build on existing manufacturing capabilities, expand research and development activities, and maximize the use of available cleanroom space, reinforcing Europe's semiconductor supply chain while addressing increasing industry demand.
The expansion project includes major upgrades to existing fabrication facilities as well as the installation of next-generation manufacturing equipment. A key part of the project is the extension of the site's automated overhead transport system, which will connect multiple production modules into a unified, high-speed manufacturing environment, improving operational efficiency across the campus.
The €5 billion capital investment program began earlier this year and is expected to create employment opportunities for construction professionals and equipment installation specialists throughout the project. In addition, Intel plans to add permanent high-tech positions as manufacturing capacity continues to grow.
"This €5 billion investment demonstrates our commitment to maximizing the capabilities of our Leixlip campus and expanding the services we provide to Intel Foundry customers," said Naga Chandrasekaran, Executive Vice President, Chief Technology and Operations Officer, and General Manager of Intel Foundry. "By upgrading our existing fabs with advanced manufacturing technologies and state-of-the-art equipment, we are increasing production of key products such as Intel Xeon 6 and future Intel Xeon processors built on Intel 3 technology. At the same time, we are reinforcing Ireland's position at the forefront of advanced semiconductor manufacturing while strengthening Europe's role in the global technology ecosystem."
The expansion also represents an important milestone in the continued development of Ireland's semiconductor industry. By strengthening local manufacturing capabilities, Intel aims to help establish Ireland as one of Europe's leading semiconductor production hubs while contributing to the European Union's objective of achieving greater technological sovereignty through a more resilient domestic supply of advanced processors.
Since establishing operations in Ireland in 1989, Intel has invested more than €30 billion in the country. Its Leixlip campus currently employs approximately **4,900 people** and has become one of Intel's flagship manufacturing sites, playing a significant role in both semiconductor innovation and Ireland's reputation as a global technology center.
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin TD welcomed the announcement, describing the investment as a strong vote of confidence in Ireland's highly skilled workforce and its position within Europe's advanced manufacturing ecosystem. He noted that the expansion further strengthens Ireland's contribution to resilient semiconductor supply chains while supporting the country's ambition to remain a leader in innovation, productivity, and sustainable economic growth.
Michael Lohan, CEO of IDA Ireland, also highlighted Intel's long-standing commitment to Ireland, stating that the new investment demonstrates the value of the country's skilled talent pool, innovative business environment, and stable investment climate. He added that the project reinforces Ireland's leadership in advanced semiconductor manufacturing while supporting both European competitiveness and the resilience of global technology supply chains.
